Activities
A typical Young @ Heart session:
starts with a movement session, when some take to the floor others swing and sway from their chairs.
then we sing a medley of songs from the Young@Heart songbook
the afternoon finishes with a song familiar to everyone ‘Show me the Way to Go Home’ (also featured in our Spotify Playlist) – another fun way that reminiscence can stimulate the memory.
TAKES A TRIP Down memory lane
Once a month we have a reminiscence theme to encourage guests to talk. The ‘chatterbox themes’ recommended by the Alzheimer’s Society focus on the seasons, films, jobs and a visit to an old sweet shop.
A group of 6 or 8 people look at photos of veteran film stars from the 40s and 50s, photos of ‘vintage’ jobs such as milkman, bus conductors and miners.
Evidence abounds that this ‘walking in their shoes’ approach is very beneficial.
We also create tactile items around themes. For example, our ‘Trip to the Seaside’ chat included bags of sand, shells and lollipops and someone talked about her first trip on a donkey!
We have also made items such as Easter bonnets and conversation cards about occupations, places to visit and many more.
Meets You at the matinee
Thanks to a generous donation from the South Beds Golf Club we’re proud to present the Young@Heart Cinema Club which is ‘Coming Soon’ in summer 2019 on a different day to the Young@Heart Cafe.
Refreshes the parts
Tea and coffee and cakes and biscuits are available, guests make a small donation but we do not have an entry fee.
Offers Tea and symphony
We like to mix up the Young@Heart activities, for example in 2019 we organised an afternoon tea at The Cross Keys in Pulloxhill (pictured, right) for our annual Summer Tea Dance.
